As the industry standard for engine filtration, the CH48111-1 is engineered to provide maximum protection against microscopic engine wear by capturing metallic particles, carbon, and other contaminants before they can circulate through the engine’s internal bearings.

This filter features a 3/4-16 female thread and is a "short" profile filter, making it the primary choice for aircraft with limited engine compartment clearance between the accessory case and the firewall. Champion’s proprietary resin-impregnated filter media provides a high dirt-holding capacity while maintaining optimal oil flow even during cold-weather starts.

The oil filter is an engine's first line of defense. By capturing metallic wear particles, it prevents "accelerated wear" of the crankshaft and camshaft bearings.5

Safety Warning: Inspect the Filter Element. At every oil change, the old CH48111-1 should be cut open using an approved aviation filter cutter (not a hacksaw) to inspect the pleats for metallic flakes. Finding small amounts of carbon is normal, but shiny "glitter" or magnetic flakes indicate impending engine failure.

Installation Tip: Always hand-tighten the filter and then apply the final torque of 18–22 foot-pounds (or 3/4 to 1 full turn after gasket contact) as per the Champion service manual. Under-torque leads to leaks; over-torque can damage the gasket or the filter adapter threads.

Technical Engineering Insight

The engineering value of the CH48111-1 lies in its Volumetric Flow Rate vs. Pressure Drop ratio. Aviation engines require high volumes of oil for both lubrication and cooling. Champion's media is designed to maintain a low $\Delta P$ (differential pressure). If the pressure drop across the media is too high, the internal bypass valve will open at approximately 12–14 PSI, allowing unfiltered oil into the engine to prevent oil starvation. The CH48111-1 is engineered to keep this valve closed during the majority of the 50-hour service interval.

Installation & Maintenance Addendum

1. Check for "Double Gasket": When removing the old filter, ensure the old gasket came off with it. Installing a new filter on top of an old gasket will cause a massive oil leak upon engine start.

2. Safety Wire: The CH48111-1 must be safety-wired through the provided holes in the canister to the engine block or filter adapter to prevent it from backing off due to vibration.

3. Oil the Gasket: Lightly coat the new filter gasket with clean engine oil before installation to ensure a smooth seal and easy removal later.
